What is Stewardship?
“Follow Me,” Jesus simply but powerfully commanded of the Apostles and they did. That call is made to us as well on this day and in this time. How do we follow Jesus? We try to live our lives as he did – the example of the perfect steward. Stewardship is the care and use of all that we have been given by God and is often explained in terms of time, talent, and treasure.
Each and every one of us has been blessed with talents. These are the things we like to do and are good at. Talents are computer skills, communications, professional abilities, knowledge, hospitality – the list is endless. We are asked to give freely of our talents to our Church so that we continue to grow in faith.
The gift of time is something that is precious to all of us. We are asked to give time to our parish so that the work of the church can continue and flourish. If everyone gave just a few hours a week to the ministry of their choice, can you imagine the work we could accomplish?
In our world today, it is sometimes difficult to conceptualize the idea of tithing – giving 10% of our net income - to charity. However, our faith requires us to consider the needs of those less fortunate. Our use of our treasure to assist those in need helps to bring justice and equality to our community and to the world.
