Gate of Heaven – Unique, Vibrant and Welcoming

Restored Gate of Heaven Church The cornerstone of Gate of Heaven Parish was laid by Bishop McFarland on May 1, 1862. The church was dedicated on March 19, 1863. The original Gate of Haven church was a brick structure built to accommodate 1,500 parishoners. In 1895, the interior of the original church was burned and the Reverend Robert Johnson, who is often referred to as the "second founder" of Gate of Heaven Parish, commenced plans to raise funds and support for the building of a second, larger church. The cornerstone of the new church was laid in the fall of 1886 by Archbishop Williams. After many years of hard work, sacrifice and stewardship, the church was dedicated by Cardinal O'Connell on May 12, 1912. On July 19, 1914, it was announced that Gate of Heaven was free from debt. In 1955, Monsignor John Powers undertook the renovations of the church property. The lower church was completely renovated and the outer church was pointed and the steeple was reinforced. The upper church was closed for one year to complete the renovations. Nothing was spared in enhancing the church and it was reopened in 1957. A multi-million dollar restoration of Gate of Heaven Parish was completed in 2006. The building's paint, lighting, plumbing, fire alarm, heating, and bricking were totally restored or replaced. The restoration will enable the church to survive for years to come.

As a parish, we recognize that the Liturgy and the Sacraments are the source of our spiritual strength; they sustain us, and inspire us to follow Jesus' loving example of humility, charity, and piety. We are committed to extending our community of faith through religious education, youth ministry, and adult education. We recognize how vital it is to be good stewards - to use our time, talent, and treasure to do the work of God on earth. We look forward to the future with the hope that our family will only continue to grow in love and faith.

Gate of Heaven is a unique parish because it works in collaboration with St. Brigid Parish, while at the same time maintaining its own distinct identity and mission. There is one administration that works for the two parishes and two schools. This model enables Gate of Heaven to share resources and collaborate with St. Brigid for our Confirmation and Religious Education Programs. It was announced in late 2008 that our parish school would be combining with St. Brigid Parish's school to form a new school, South Boston Catholic Academy. For information and to register, contact either school office (GH: 617-268-8431 SB: 617-268-2326).

Our staff is ready to meet the ever changing needs of our church and community. We are looking forward to the future and the strengthening of our faith family.

We are conveniently located and are on three MBTA bus lines and all are welcome to attend Mass here or to stop by the parish office.

We look forward to hearing from you!
