Marie Ryan, Katherine Rose Santos, Selina Margaret Sheppeck, Colton Cole
Wojdag, Ciara Elizabeth Dalessio, Clifford Jack Swain and Anna Doris Noonan, who
by virtue of their Baptism last month were initiated into our Faith

Welcome to Fr. Michael Banks, OFM Cap.
Part-time Priest for our Parishes
We welcome Fr. Michael Banks, a Capuchin Franciscan that will be
assisting in our parishes a couple of days a week beginning next week.
Fr. Michael is the former Provincial of the New York/New England
Province of the Capuchin Friars. He has
been assisting at St. Ann’s Parish in Dorchester this past year. Next year he has offered to share duties
between St. Ann’s and St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven Parishes. He will be with us a few days a week, and one
or two Masses on the weekend. We thank
Fr. Michael for his service and will be able to welcome him the week of July 5th. The following is a message from Fr. Michael:
As the new priest helping
out this year, your pastor, Fr. Casey, has asked me to write a brief
introduction. My name is Fr. Michael
Banks, OFM Cap., a Capuchin Franciscan priest of the New York/New England
Province of St. Mary, stationed at San Lorenzo Friary in Jamaica Plain, the
former convent of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.
I was born in 1945 and
raised in St. Ann Parish, Dorchester. My
parents, Vincent and Mary (Elwood) both grew up and were married in 1938 at St.
Brigid’s. My father’s parents were
married in Gate of Heaven Church.
I was ordained in 1984 and
have spent my whole priesthood serving in parishes in New York, as well as in
administrative positions in our Province.
San Lorenzo Friary is our house of formation for our students studying
for the priesthood at the Boston College School of Theology & Ministry.
In addition to helping out
at St. Brigid and Gate of Heaven, I assist at St. Ann’s. I consider it a real blessing to have the
opportunity to minister at the parishes that are so important a part of my
family’s history!
Two New Auxiliary Bishops
for Boston
Congratulations to Bishop-Elect Kennedy and Bishop–Elect Uglietto
who were named this week by Pope Benedict to be Auxiliary Bishops for the
Archdiocese of Boston. Fr. Arthur
Kennedy is currently the Rector of St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, and Fr. Peter
Uglietto is currently the Rector of Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in
Weston.
Congratulations to our two new Bishops – and we pledge our prayers
and support.

Happy 4th of July
Weekend!!!
YEARLY MISSIONARY VISIT
SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND
FOR P.I.M.E.
MISSIONARIES
Will be taken after
communion
Each year, every parish in the Archdiocese of Boston welcomes a
Missionary in order to help support the missionary activity around the
world. This year we welcome this weekend
Fr. Ghezzi form PIME Missionaries.
PIME (the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions) is a
Missionary Institute of priests and brothers who dedicate their lives to the
mission among non-Christians on the five continents. Founded in Italy in 1850, PIME opened its
North America Region Headquarters in Detroit in 1947. Mission awareness is promoted and financial
assistance for missions in developing countries is provided.
Reverend Giancarlo Ghezzi, PME, will be here this weekend to talk
to us about his work as a PIME Missionary.
Please welcome him and be as generous as you can.
There are envelopes at the
doors of the Churches this weekend for the special second collection
that will be taken up after communion today.

UNDERSTANDING THE MASS
Gathering as a Community
When
we enter the church building for the celebration of Mass, one of the first
things we encounter is a holy water font.
This water has been blessed by a priest or deacon, just as the water was
blessed at our baptism. When we dip our
finger into the font and bless ourselves with the water and the sign of the
cross, this gesture is meant to remind us of the sacrament of baptism. It was through baptism that we first became
members of the Church, sons and daughters of God, and had our place in a pew –
but not before genuflecting to the Blessed Sacrament! We genuflect by lowering our right knee until
it touches the floor. This is a sign of
reverence for the presence of Christ in the consecrated hosts in the
tabernacle. If the tabernacle is in the
center of the church, we should genuflect in that direction; if it is located
to the side, we should direct our genuflection to the side. In some churches, the tabernacle is not kept
in the main building but in a side chapel.
If that is the case, then instead of genuflecting, we would make a profound
bow toward the altar. We also bow
instead of genuflecting when the tabernacle is empty, as on Holy Thursday or
Good Friday.
